From Asphalt to Standing Seam: A Colonial Red Metal Roof Upgrade in Winchester, VA

Back to Recent Projects

For homeowners who plan to stay put for the long haul, few exterior upgrades deliver like a standing seam metal roof. That was the thinking for Jerry, the owner of a charming Cape Cod here in Winchester, who decided it was time to retire his aging asphalt shingles in favor of something built to last decades. He found us on Google, and like a lot of folks in the area, he specifically wanted to work with a local company he could count on. We were glad to be that company. This project is a great showcase of what our Winchester roofing team does best: a clean, full-scope metal roof replacement paired with new gutters.

Cape Cod-style homes, with their steep front-facing pitches and classic lines, are a perfect canvas for standing seam. The crisp vertical panels complement the architecture beautifully — and in a rich Colonial Red, this roof became the standout feature of the whole street.

Why Upgrade from Shingles to Standing Seam Metal?

Asphalt shingles are a fine, economical choice, but they have a service life that tops out around 20-25 years. A quality standing seam metal roof is a different category of investment: properly installed, it can protect a home for 40-plus years with minimal maintenance. For a homeowner who isn't planning to move, the math is compelling. Beyond longevity, metal sheds snow and rain efficiently, resists wind, and won't lose granules into the gutters the way an aging shingle roof does.

Jerry's roof measured a modest but steep structure — roughly 12 to 15 squares across four facets at a 10/12 pitch. That steepness is exactly where the clean look of standing seam shines, and it's also why proper installation technique matters so much.

The 24-Gauge Snap-Lock System We Installed

We tore the old roof off down to a clean deck and rebuilt it as a complete weather-tight system. The headline material was a 24-gauge standing seam snap-lock panel in striated Colonial Red — striated panels and a concealed clip system both work to reduce the "oil canning" ripple that can show up on flat metal in the sun. Here's what went into the assembly:

  • 24-gauge striated standing seam panels in Colonial Red, with a 40-year manufacturer finish warranty.
  • Concealed clip fastening system — panels float on clips rather than being face-screwed, allowing for thermal movement and a cleaner finished look.
  • High-heat ice & water shield at the eaves, valleys, pitch breaks, and penetrations — a metal-specific underlayment rated for the higher temperatures under a steel roof.
  • RhinoRoof synthetic underlayment across the deck for a durable secondary moisture barrier.
  • Pitch-specific eave drip edge, rake drip edge, and pitch-break trim — all formed in matching 24-gauge metal to precisely match the panel color.
  • Snow hooks to manage snow shed safely off the steep facets, and a 40-year Pro-Cap screw system at fastened points.

One detail worth highlighting: every trim piece on a Cenvar standing seam job is fabricated in the same 24-gauge metal as the panels, so the eaves, rakes, and wall transitions match the roof exactly rather than looking like an afterthought. That attention to the corresponding flashings — transition, valley, endwall, and gable trims — is what separates a metal roof that lasts from one that leaks.

Finishing the Job with New Gutters

A new roof deserves a drainage system to match. We added new 5-inch gutters with color-matched 2x3 downspouts and elbows, sized for both the single-story and two-story sections of the home. Replacing the gutters at the same time as the roof is the efficient move — one crew, one mobilization, and a guarantee that the new gutters integrate cleanly with the new drip edge instead of fighting the old roofline.

The Cenvar Difference for Winchester Homeowners

Jerry wanted a local team, and that's exactly the experience we aim to deliver. Every full standing seam replacement comes with a 10-year workmanship warranty (transferable within three years), with an optional lifetime workmanship warranty available for owner-occupied homes. Just as importantly, we work on a $0 down, no-payment-until-completion basis — you don't pay until the roof is installed to spec, the site is clean, and you're satisfied. For homeowners who'd rather spread the cost, Service Finance financing is available on request.
