Ventilation Conversion & Roof Replacement on Briarwood Drive

Location: Briarwood Drive, Danville, VA 24540 Service Provided: Shingle Roof Replacement Location: Danville, VA

Project Story

For this single-story home (with a basement) on Briarwood Drive, the homeowners needed a full roof replacement. However, a standard swap of shingles wasn't enough; the roof had a "mixed" ventilation system consisting of power fans and turbines.‍Our team identified that these competing exhaust methods could actually hurt the home's energy efficiency. We proposed a scope of work that included removing the old mechanical vents, decking over the holes, and installing a passive ridge vent system. This conversion ensures consistent, balanced airflow across the entire underside of the roof deck.

Key Upgrades & Materials

We upgraded the home's curb appeal and functionality with a high-definition shingle and specific component choices.‍The project specifications included:

  • Architectural Shingles: We installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Shingles in the color Williamsburg Gray. This slate-grey tone offers a classic look that pairs well with various siding colors.
  • Ventilation Overhaul: We removed the existing power fan and turbine vent. We repaired the decking where these units sat and installed OC VentSure Ridge Vents along the peak to allow heat to escape naturally and evenly.
  • Aesthetic Details: To match the home's trim, we installed Brown Aluminum Drip Edge along the eaves and rakes.
  • Specialty Flashing: We utilized a Split Boot for a difficult pipe penetration, ensuring a watertight seal even where a standard boot wouldn't fit.

Why Remove Power Fans?

Combining power fans with other exhaust vents (like turbines or ridge vents) often causes "short-circuiting," where the fan pulls air in from the nearest vent rather than the soffits. By switching this Danville home to a dedicated Ridge Vent system, we ensured the attic "breathes" correctly, pulling cool air from the bottom and releasing hot air at the very top.

Is your attic ventilation working against you?If you have fans, turbines, and ridge vents all on the same roof, your system might be inefficient. Let us check your airflow.
