Project Story

For this homeowner on McCoy Road in Blacksburg, longevity was the top priority. Living in a 50-year-old home, he wanted a roofing solution that would last. While he initially considered a metal roof for its lifespan, he ultimately selected a premium architectural shingle system that offers exceptional durability with a distinct aesthetic character.‍Our New River Valley team accommodated the homeowner's class schedule to perform a detailed inspection. We identified specific technical needs—like existing copper plumbing stacks—that required specialized attention to ensure the new roof would perform flawlessly for decades.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

We installed a system designed to stand the test of time and weather.‍The project specifications included:

  • Distinctive Shingles: We installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Architectural Shingles in the color Terra Cotta . This warm, reddish-brown hue provides a unique, custom look that sets the home apart from the standard grey roofs in the area.
  • Copper Pipe Protection: The home features copper plumbing pipes protruding through the roof. Standard flashing can corrode when in contact with copper. We installed Lifetime Plumbing Boots paired with specific Pipe Sleeves to isolate the copper, preventing galvanic corrosion and ensuring a leak-free seal.
  • Ventilation Overhaul: We removed three old square vents and decked over the holes , replacing them with a continuous Cenguard Ridge Vent system. This modernizes the attic's airflow and cleans up the roofline.
  • Complex Flashing: We utilized a Split Boot for an electrical mast penetration and performed a proper re-flash on the chimney to secure these critical potential leak points.

Why "Pipe Sleeves" Matter

Many roofers overlook the chemistry of construction materials. Copper pipes can react with aluminum or galvanized steel flashing, leading to rapid corrosion and leaks. By identifying these copper pipes and installing protective sleeves, we prevented a chemical reaction that could have ruined the homeowner's investment.‍
