A roof isn't always one uniform surface. Many homes have a steep main roof that sheds water beautifully alongside a low-slope section — often over a porch or entryway — where shingles alone simply can't do the job. That was exactly the situation at Eron Callahan's home in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and it's why our Altoona roofing team approached this full replacement with two different roofing materials, each matched to the slope it was covering.
While this project took place in Johnstown, it's a great example of the material expertise our Altoona branch brings to homes throughout central Pennsylvania. Here's how the job came together.
Asphalt shingles are engineered to shed water on slopes of 2/12 and steeper — and they perform best when gravity does most of the work. But when a section of roof flattens out, water moves slowly and can work its way back under the shingles. Forcing shingles onto a low-slope area is one of the most common causes of persistent leaks we're called in to fix.
On the Callahan home, the low-slope valley directly over the front door was exactly this kind of problem area. Rather than shingle over it and hope for the best, our crew installed a purpose-built Mule-Hide modified bitumen membrane — a base sheet and cap sheet system, sealed with primer, that creates a continuous waterproof surface designed specifically for low slopes. It carries its own 15-year material warranty and keeps the most vulnerable spot on the roof watertight over the busiest entrance to the home.
For the primary roof, Eron selected our Cenguard Gold shingle replacement package, built around Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration architectural shingles in a warm Brownwood. These 50-year shingles use Owens Corning's SureNail Technology for excellent wind resistance, with color-matched ridge cap and brown drip edge tying the whole look together.
The complete system installed on this home included:
This was a genuinely complex roof — 16 facets stitched together by 26 feet of hips and a remarkable 63 feet of valleys. Valleys are where two roof planes channel their combined water into one path, which makes them among the highest-volume, highest-risk areas on any roof. Every one has to be underlaid with ice and water shield and cut precisely so water flows cleanly off the roof. That kind of detail-heavy work is where the craftsmanship of our Pennsylvania roofing crews really shows.
Eron's new roof is protected by our 20-year Cenguard Gold warranty covering both workmanship and materials, transferable if the home changes hands within five years — with the low-slope membrane carrying its own additional 15-year material warranty. As with every Cenvar project, he paid $0 down with nothing due until the job was complete and he was satisfied, with Service Finance financing available for those who want it.
