Project Story

Many older homes in Roanoke feature complex rooflines, often combining steep pitches with flatter sections like porches or additions. This property on Staunton Avenue NW was a perfect example, requiring a roofing contractor skilled in multiple material systems to ensure the entire home was watertight.‍Our Roanoke team managed this dual-system project seamlessly. We replaced the main roof structure with high-performance architectural shingles while simultaneously installing a dedicated low-slope system for the flatter areas, ensuring consistent protection across every square foot of the home.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

To address the different pitches of the roof, we utilized specific materials designed for each application:

  • Main Roof (Steep Slope): We installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Architectural Shingles in Onyx Black. These shingles provide excellent curb appeal and industry-leading wind resistance.
  • Low-Slope Area (Flat Roof): For the flatter sections where shingles would not shed water efficiently, we installed a Mule-Hide 2-Ply System (Base Sheet + Cap Sheet). This rolled roofing solution is specifically designed to handle sitting water and prevent leaks in low-pitch applications.
  • Ventilation: We updated the intake and exhaust systems with OC VentSure Ridge Vents and a new 8" Broan Vent to ensure proper airflow through the attic.

Why a "Dual-System" Matters

Using standard shingles on a flat or low-slope roof is a recipe for leaks. Shingles rely on gravity to shed water; when the slope is too shallow, water can back up under them. By identifying this need and switching to a Mule-Hide rolled system for the flat section, we ensured the homeowner wouldn't face water damage down the road.‍

Does your home have a flat porch or addition?

If your roof has different slopes or flat sections, you need a roofer who understands the right material for every angle.
