Service Provided: Roof Replacement + Gutters | Branch: Blacksburg, VA
When the homeowner at 1410 Harding Road called our Blacksburg roofing team, the issue wasn't just an aging roof — it was a low-slope back section that needed special engineering attention to stay watertight, plus failing gutters that had been overflowing onto the foundation. We delivered a budget-conscious Cenguard Silver shingle replacement bundled with new seamless gutters at 10% off — total project under $6,000, with no shortcuts on the technical detailing that actually keeps water out.
Standard architectural shingles are designed for pitches of 4/12 or steeper, where gravity does most of the work moving water off the roof. Anything between 2/12 and 4/12 is a different animal — water sits longer, finds seams, and works under shingles in ways a steep roof never deals with. TAMKO Heritage shingles, like nearly all asphalt architectural shingles, carry warranty exclusions for low-slope sections unless the entire facet is covered with a self-adhered ice and water barrier underneath. Skip that step, and you're not only voiding the warranty — you're setting up a leak on a five-to-ten-year clock.
This is the kind of detail that separates a properly executed budget roof from a cheap one. We've seen plenty of "savings" turn into expensive mid-life replacements because a previous contractor cut the ice-and-water layer to save a few rolls of material. On this Blacksburg project, the back roof facet sat right in that 2/12-to-4/12 zone where the math doesn't lie.
We installed a Cenguard Silver package across roughly 12 squares: a full tear-off followed by TAMKO Heritage architectural shingles in Rustic Black. Critically, on the low-slope back facet, we installed Cenguard Ice & Water Shield over the entire decking surface — not just the eaves and valleys — to give that section the watertight underlayment it needs to satisfy the manufacturer's warranty requirements.
White aluminum drip edge wrapped the eaves and rakes. Cenguard starter strip went down on all edges. The homeowner bundled new gutters at 10% off through our Bundle & Save offer, addressing the second half of the water management problem — getting roof runoff away from the foundation. The Cenguard Silver package comes with a 10-year material warranty and 5-year workmanship warranty, with TAMKO Heritage shingles in Rustic Black or Weathered Wood as the available color options.
Silver is our value tier, and we're transparent about what's different: drip edge, ice and water barrier, and starter strip are installed only on the eaves rather than around every edge and penetration. That's appropriate for many homes — particularly those with simpler roof geometries and fewer flashed transitions. For homes with multiple skylights, complex chimney work, or significant valley work, we usually steer customers toward the Cenguard Gold package instead. On this Harding Road project, the geometry was simple enough that Silver was the right call, with the targeted ice-and-water upgrade where it actually mattered.
You don't have to choose between affordability and quality. Our Silver package gets you a fully code-compliant roof with the technical detailing your home actually needs — and we'll be straightforward about which package fits your situation.
