Location: Queen Street, Beckley, WV 25801 Service Provided: Shingle Roof Replacement Branch: Beckley, WV

Project Story

For this two-story home on Queen Street in Beckley, the challenge wasn't just age—it was architecture. While the main roof had a standard pitch suitable for shingles, the back addition featured a low-slope design that demanded a different approach. Using asphalt shingles on such a flat surface would have invited water intrusion and premature failure.‍Our Beckley team designed a hybrid solution. We restored the main roof with premium architectural shingles and treated the back addition with a specialized Mule-Hide rolled roofing system. This "right tool for the right job" approach ensures every part of the home is waterproofed according to its specific needs.‍

Key Upgrades & Materials

We combined aesthetic appeal with commercial-grade durability for the flat sections.‍The project specifications included:

  • Designer Shingles: On the steep-slope sections, we installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Architectural Shingles in the color Peppercorn. This deep, textured grey adds substantial curb appeal to the home's facade.
  • Low-Slope Defense: For the back addition, we installed a Mule-Hide 2-Ply System (Base Sheet + Cap Sheet) in Black. This self-adhered system creates a seamless, watertight barrier specifically engineered for roofs where water drains slowly. * Debris Protection: To keep the new drainage system flowing freely, we installed Sure Flow 6" Gutter Guards. This protects the home's new 6-inch gutters from clogging with leaves and debris.
  • Ventilation: We updated the attic airflow by installing Cenguard Ridge Vents, promoting a cooler, healthier attic space.

Why "Mule-Hide" for Low Slopes?

Standard shingles rely on gravity to shed water. On a flat or low-slope roof, water can back up under the shingles and rot the deck. The Mule-Hide system we installed on the addition is a continuous membrane that seals the roof shut, ensuring that standing water or slow runoff never finds a way inside.‍

Does your home have a flat roof section?

Don't let a contractor slap shingles on a flat porch or addition. We use specialized materials designed to handle low-slope water dynamics.
