A Complex 16-Facet Roof Replacement in Huntington, WV: Mastering Hips, Valleys & Ventilation

Back to Recent Projects

Some roofs are simple rectangles. This one in Huntington, West Virginia was anything but. When Frank Hawkins called our Huntington roofing team about replacing his aging 20-year-old roof, our measurements revealed one of the more intricate residential roofs we see: 16.3 facets, 17 valleys, and a staggering 156 feet of hips. Replacing a roof this complex isn't about laying shingles fast — it's about getting every angle, intersection, and transition exactly right.

Frank's roof wasn't leaking yet, which made this the ideal time to act. Replacing a roof proactively, before failure, means no water damage, no rushed decisions, and a clean install on a dry deck. Here's how our crew tackled it.

Why a Cut-Up Roof Is the True Test of a Roofer

On a plain gable roof, the shingle field does most of the work. On a roof like Frank's, the opposite is true — almost all the risk lives in the hips, valleys, and wall intersections. Consider the numbers: this roof had only 6 linear feet of straight ridge but 156 feet of hips and 17 separate valleys. Every one of those lines is a place where two roof planes meet, and every meeting point has to be flashed and cut precisely or it becomes a future leak.

Our crew hand-cut every valley and wrapped each transition with care, the same standard of craftsmanship our West Virginia roofing teams bring to every replacement. On a steep 9/12 pitch, that work is slower and more demanding — but it's exactly what a roof like this requires.

The Cenguard Gold System: TruDefinition Duration in Estate Gray

Frank selected our Cenguard Gold shingle replacement package, built around Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration architectural shingles in a handsome Estate Gray. These 50-year shingles feature Owens Corning's SureNail Technology, giving the roof excellent wind resistance — important on a tall two-story home with this many exposed planes.

The complete system installed on this home included:

  • Shingles: Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration (50-year), Estate Gray
  • Hip & ridge: Color-matched hip and ridge cap across all 156 feet of hips
  • Waterproofing: Ice & water shield on all low-slope facets and valleys, plus synthetic underlayment
  • Flashing: All wall flashing replaced — 50 feet of counter/skirt flashing and 52 feet of step flashing
  • Edge: New white aluminum drip edge along every eave and rake

Solving the Ventilation Problem

A roof with only six feet of ridge presents a real challenge: there's almost nowhere to run continuous ridge venting. Rather than force a solution that wouldn't move enough air, our team engineered the ventilation around the roof's actual geometry. We installed a GAF Master-Flo power fan to actively exhaust hot, moist attic air, supported by two slant-back static vents for balanced airflow.

Proper attic ventilation isn't a luxury — it protects the roof deck from moisture, helps prevent ice damming in winter, and extends shingle life by keeping the underside of the roof cooler. On a complex roof where conventional ridge venting falls short, this kind of tailored approach is what keeps the whole system healthy. A thorough roof inspection is the best way to catch ventilation gaps before they cause problems.
