A 12/12 Roof Most Crews Won't Climb: A Steep Blacksburg, VA Replacement

Back to Recent Projects

One of the Steepest Roofs Around, in Blacksburg, VA

Every roof has its difficulty, but a few are in a category of their own. The home we replaced on Ashford Court in Blacksburg, VA sits at a dramatic 12/12 pitch — a full 45-degree angle — and layers on fifteen facets and a maze of valleys for good measure. This is the kind of roof some contractors politely decline. For our New River Valley roofing team, it's a chance to do what we do best: bring the right crew, equipment, and technique to a roof that genuinely demands all three.

What a 12/12 Pitch Really Means

A 12/12 slope rises a full twelve inches for every twelve it runs — steep enough that you truly cannot stand on it unaided. On this project, more than 80% of the roof fell into the steep-slope range, which changes everything about how the work is done. Roof jacks, staging, and fall protection aren't optional; they're what let our installers place and nail every shingle to specification instead of rushing to keep their footing. The reward for that extra effort is a roof installed correctly from ridge to eave, with none of the shortcuts that steep pitches tempt lesser crews into taking.

Steep and Cut-Up: Valleys on a Near-Vertical Roof

As if the pitch weren't enough, this roof is also carved into fifteen facets with an extensive run of valleys. Valleys concentrate water from two slopes into one channel, and on a steep roof that water moves fast and hard. Our crew ran ice-and-water shield through every valley and around all penetrations, then cut the valleys cleanly so runoff sheds off the roof instead of driving underneath the shingles. A careful roof inspection mapped each facet and valley before tear-off, so nothing about this complex geometry was left to improvisation on this shingle roof replacement.

TAMKO Titan XT Architectural Shingles in Shadow Grey

For the new roof, the homeowner chose TAMKO Titan XT architectural shingles in a refined Shadow Grey — a heavyweight 50-year shingle with excellent wind resistance, a fitting match for a tall, prominent roof. The full system included:

  • Shingles: TAMKO Titan XT (50-year), Shadow Grey — roughly 26 squares
  • Ice & water shield: in all valleys, at eaves, pitch changes, and penetrations
  • Synthetic underlayment over the remaining deck
  • Starter strip and color-matched hip & ridge cap for sealed edges
  • Continuous ridge ventilation, new drip edge, flashing, and plumbing boots throughout

Backed by a Transferable Warranty

Even the most demanding roof is protected by our 25-year Cenguard Gold warranty, covering both workmanship and material defects and transferable if the home changes hands within five years. As always, there's no deposit and no payment until the job is complete, with Service Finance financing available. It's the careful, expert work our Virginia roofing crews bring to every pitch — no matter how steep.
