Roof Damage To Look For After A Summer Storm

July has been a hot month in central Virginia, and with it have come many afternoon thunderstorms. Whether we enjoy thunderstorms or not, most of us just stay out of the pool, go inside, and don’t give the weather another thought. However, a summer storm is a common cause of roof damage, and if a storm is particularly bad, it’s a good idea to make sure your roof weathered it well. Here are 3 things you should look for:

Missing Or Damaged Shingles

One of the biggest problems roofs face after a particularly strong summer storm is shingle damage. While not all shingle damage is visible from the ground, some is, and a visual inspection is a great place to start. Check for any bare spots where shingles may have been blown off in the wind. Also check for any visible cracks or other damage that the storm may have caused.

Damaged Gutters

While you’re at it, check your gutters for any signs of damage. Depending on the severity of the storm, your gutters could have been dented or bent. It is also important to check to make sure the storm didn’t blow debris into the gutters that could cause them to become clogged during the next rain.

Signs Of A Leak

Finally, check for signs of a leak and other water damage, particularly if the rain was heavy. Sometimes water damage becomes visible after a heavy storm, and it is important to catch these trouble spots in a roof before the damage becomes more extensive. The sooner you repair water damage, the faster (and cheaper!) the repair process is.
